    Japan has been one of the early adopters of 5G, with operators focusing not just on radio access upgrades but also on transforming the core network. SoftBank has taken a clear direction toward a cloud native 5G core architecture. This shift is not only about supporting higher data rates, but about building a flexible and programmable network that can handle different types of services with varying requirements.     In a traditional mobile core network, functions are deployed on dedicated hardware or virtual machines with limited flexibility. This allows independent scaling of each network function, faster deployment, and better resource utilization.

Key functions such as AMF (Access and Mobility Management Function), SMF (Session Management Function), and UPF (User Plane Function) are designed as microservices. This modular structure helps in isolating faults, upgrading components without impacting the entire system, and introducing new features with less risk.

    SoftBank has worked with multiple vendors and also invested in in house development capabilities. This multi vendor strategy reduces dependency on a single supplier and allows better control over the network evolution. However, it also requires strong system integration and testing processes to ensure interoperability between different components.

    One of the main advantages of the cloud native 5G core is dynamic scaling. During peak traffic hours, specific functions such as the UPF can be scaled horizontally to handle higher throughput. During low traffic periods, resources can be reduced to optimize cost. This elasticity is important for managing traffic patterns in dense urban areas such as Tokyo, where user demand can vary significantly.

    Another key aspect is network slicing. SoftBank’s cloud native core supports logical network partitions on the same physical infrastructure. Each slice can be configured with its own performance parameters such as latency, throughput, and reliability. This is useful for enterprise services, IoT deployments, and applications like smart factories where consistent performance is required.

    Automation is a major part of this transformation. SoftBank uses CI/CD pipelines for continuous integration and deployment of network functions. This approach is similar to IT systems and helps reduce the time required to roll out updates. Automated testing and validation are integrated into the pipeline to maintain service stability.

    Observability and monitoring are also improved in the cloud native setup. Metrics, logs, and traces are collected from each microservice and analyzed in real time. This helps in faster fault detection and root cause analysis. Compared to legacy systems, troubleshooting becomes more data driven and less dependent on manual checks.

    Security is handled at multiple layers. Container security, API security, and network level protection are integrated into the architecture. Since the system is distributed, proper identity and access management is required for each service interaction. SoftBank has implemented zero trust principles where each request is verified before access is granted.

    Despite these benefits, the transition to a cloud native 5G core is not without challenges. Integration complexity increases with multiple vendors and microservices. Skilled resources are required to manage Kubernetes environments and cloud native tools. Also, maintaining consistent performance across distributed components requires careful planning and testing.

    SoftBank’s approach shows how telecom networks are moving closer to IT cloud models. The focus is shifting from hardware based deployment to software driven operations. This allows faster service creation, better scalability, and improved efficiency.

    In summary, the cloud native 5G core transformation in Japan, led by operators like SoftBank, is setting a practical direction for future telecom networks. The combination of SBA, containerization, automation, and multi vendor integration is enabling a more flexible and scalable network that can support both consumer and enterprise use cases effectively.
