Generative AI has lowered the barrier to entry for cybercrime. Attackers who previously lacked the language skills to write convincing phishing emails now generate flawless British English at the click of a button. Threat actors use AI to create polymorphic malware that mutates its code signature with each deployment, evading pattern-based detection tools.

The security industry talks about AI threats in theoretical terms, but the practical impacts are already visible. Deepfake voice calls have tricked finance teams into authorising fraudulent transfers. AI-generated phishing content has pushed click rates higher than manually crafted campaigns. Automated vulnerability scanning powered by large language models identifies and exploits weaknesses faster than human operators.

    What AI Changes for Attackers

Speed and scale improve dramatically. An attacker can generate hundreds of unique phishing email variants in minutes, each tailored to a different target using publicly available information from LinkedIn and company websites. AI assists in writing exploit code, analysing leaked source code for vulnerabilities, and automating reconnaissance against target organisations.

Social engineering becomes more convincing. Voice cloning technology requires only a few seconds of audio to generate a passable imitation. Attackers combine voice deepfakes with spoofed caller ID to impersonate executives, IT support staff, or business partners in real time.

William Fieldhouse, Director of Aardwolf Security Ltd, comments: “AI has not changed what attackers target. It has changed how quickly and convincingly they can operate. The vulnerabilities they exploit remain the same: weak authentication, unpatched systems, and misconfigured applications. Organisations that get the fundamentals right are well positioned to defend against AI-enhanced attacks because the attack surface has not fundamentally changed, only the speed of exploitation.”

    Defending Against AI-Enhanced Threats

Focus on the fundamentals that stop both human and AI-driven attacks. Patch promptly. Enforce multi-factor authentication. Segment your network. Monitor for anomalous behaviour. These controls remain effective regardless of whether the attacker is a human, an AI tool, or a combination of both.

Test your defences with web application penetration testing that reflects current attack techniques. Ensure your web applications handle automated input manipulation, credential stuffing, and rapid-fire exploitation attempts that AI tools enable.

Engage a best penetration testing company that stays current with emerging AI-driven attack methods. Testing against yesterday’s techniques leaves you exposed to today’s threats. The attackers have adopted AI. Your security testing should account for that reality.

Defensive AI tools also show promise. Machine learning models that analyse network traffic patterns detect anomalies faster than human analysts can process them. AI-powered email security systems evaluate message context, sender behaviour, and writing style to flag social engineering attempts that rule-based filters miss entirely. The arms race between offensive and defensive AI is well underway.

Train staff to verify high-value requests through out-of-band channels regardless of how convincing the communication appears. A quick phone call to a known number costs nothing and defeats even the most sophisticated deepfake attack. Technology changes constantly. Verification procedures remain effective regardless.

AI is a tool, not a magic weapon. It amplifies existing attack capabilities without inventing new vulnerability classes. Secure the basics and you will withstand whatever AI throws at you.
